As we talked about earlier, people find fairway woods harder to hit. It can be made easier by choosing the right wood to hit off the fairway.
There are many different lofts on fairway woods and |
 |
|
it is important to make the right choice when buying one.
A 3 wood has a 15° loft, a 4 wood 18°, 5 wood 21°, 7 wood 27° and even 11 wood for those shots out of the rough.

Most people try to use the 3 wood off the fairway because they think of distance that can be gained in those efforts to reach those par 5s in two shots.
I recommend that most people would benefit from using a 4 or 5 wood off the fairway because with the added loft it's easier to get the ball airborne and keep the ball in play. |
| If you are playing a long par 4 or 5 and you hit your tee shot into the rough, it will be far easier to get your distance with your 5 wood or 7 wood or even an 11 wood if you have one, than trying to use 3 or 4 irons where the grass tends to get wrapped around the neck of the club, making it difficult to get the ball out of the rough and back on the fairway. |
