John Phillips Tuition Series:
How to Improve Your Practice Time
Stretching / Drills / Percentage Golf / Winter Golf / Indoor Practice

Drills

There are so many ways that good practice on the range will help improve your golf on the golf course.

1.

Practice with each club to get to know the distance you hit the ball:

  • pw = 130 yards
  • 8 iron = 150 yards
  • 6 iron = 170 yards
  • 4 iron = 190 yards
  • 4 wood = 230 yards
  • driver = 250 yards
Each club is about 7 to 9 yards difference in distance, so many golfers don't know how far they hit each club which results in them coming up short or going through the green. This soon adds up to extra shots on your score card.
2. Practice shots from poor lies as well as good, so when you find you have a bad lie on the course you feel more confident. When hitting off mats on the range, hit shots straight off the mat. This will help improve your timing and striking of the golf ball.
3. Practice with all your clubs, not just your favourite clubs. Most people don't use their 3 or 4 irons off the fairways. The range is the place to try them out.
4.

Practice how to draw and fade the ball as well as high and low shots because there will be times when out playing on the course you will need to play these shots. Remember that when practicing it is far better to hit 40 balls in an hour taking your time with each shot than 120 poor shots in 1/2 an hour.

From the range to the course..

Most golfers playing shots into the greens or par 3 holes hit the ball short of the flag. This is because they don't know how far they hit each club.

As we talked about earlier, practice on the range to know exactly how far you hit each club, the top players know to the nearest yard how far each club goes and how far they have left to the flag. The more you can repeat a good swing, the closer you will get the ball to the flag and lower your scores.
