John Phillips Tuition Series: Chipping
Grip / Setup /Which Club
Setup
|
The set up for chip shots should be with the ball played slightly right of centre of your stance, the weight moved on to your left side (about 65%). Stand slightly open to target, with your feet slightly closer together than with normal shots. Try to keep your hands over your left knee, forming a reasonably straight line down the shaft with your arms. |

Knowing Which Club to Play and When
There are three clubs that I would recommend to use for playing these chip shots, the 6, 8 and SI.
With all these clubs you are trying to land the ball on the putting surface first, letting the ball then roll to the flag.

With the 6 iron the ball will land 1/3 of the way on the green and roll 2/3. You would play this shot when the flag is positioned further up the green.
|
With the 8iron the ball will land 1/2 way on the green and roll 1/2 way.

The hardest of the three shots is with the S/I because people try to lift the ball into the air rather than letting the club do the work. With this club you would land the ball 2/3 of the way on the green and let it run 1/3 to the flag.
|
With all these shots you must try to nip the grass and not lift the ball. A good way to practice this is to place another club or cane sticking up through your hands to the left side of the body. Set yourself up and make a few swings. If the club hits your left side, on the follow through, you know that your left wrist has broken and you are scooping the ball into the air. This will lead to bad shots.
