TIPS FROM
KEN VENTURI:
A SOUND GRIP

Back to Index

A sound grip is probably the single most important fundamental in the game of golf.  There are three major grips used by all golfers.  The overlap or Vardon grip, the interlock grip and the ten finger grip.  Most good players use the overlap grip

but depending on the size and strength of you hands, the other two grips have been used by many a great player.  The key element regardless of the style grip you choose is that the “V” s formed by your thumb and fore finger of each hand point between your right shoulder and right eye for right handed players and conversely the left shoulder and left eye for left handed players.  This will keep your hands and wrists in a neutral position throughout the swing so that both sides of your body can work together making a solid swing.  Also make sure you grip the club in your fingers and not up into the palms of your hands.

Remember also that grip pressure is a very important element of a sound grip.  If we

were to rank gripping the club from 1 to 10, 1 being  very soft and 10 being a strangle hold on the club, 3-4 would be the optimum level of pressure.  Many people hold the club too tightly not allowing their arms wrists and hands to swing freely.
