Multi-material
head designs are clearly all the rage in Carlsbad, California,
the spirtual home of golf technolgy. However, unlike neighbours
Callaway and Taylor Made, Cobra has selected aluminium bronze
for the heavy backweight which lowers the centre-of-gravity
and promotes and promoted airborne flight from their latest
titanium driver. Most novel is the progressive face-depth
which varies through the range of drivers, with the Tour (7.5-
and 9.5-degree) lofts having deeper faces, for a more penetrating
flight, and less offset for more workability. But, ideal for
slicers will be the offset version, available in 9.5- and
10.5-degrees whose shallower face when combined with the offset
should actively promote some right-to-left action.

Meanwhile
the Gravity Back irons feature a similar progressive backweight
system designed using a computer to optimize the inertia (the
resistance to twisting at impact) that the face of an iron
displays. The computer calculates the ideal point of weighting
according to the loft and shaft-length of each iron which
naturally varies throughout the set.

Drivers £275; irons from £443 (for a set of eight)
