GOLF COMPANY SIGNS FORMER
RYDER
CUP CAPTAIN BERNARD GALLACHER TO ENDORSEMENT CONTRACT
CHESSINGTON,
Surrey - February 26 1999 - Bernard Gallacher has joined the Callaway
Golf Company team of staff professionals. Gallacher, who turned
50 years old on February 9, expects to make his senior debut at
the PGA Seniors' Championship in April. Gallacher will primarily
compete on the European Seniors Tour, including his scheduled European
debut at the Beko Classic in Turkey in early May.
Gallacher
has a distinguished history as one of Europe's premier golfers,
having played in the Ryder Cup eight times between 1969 and 1983
and accruing 14 wins on the PGA European Tour. Gallacher won the
tour's Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award in 1968 at the
age of 19. The following year he became the youngest winner of the
tour's Harry Vardon Award by leading the European PGA Tour Order
of Merit.
Gallacher
is a three times captain of the European side in the Ryder Cup matches.
He lead the European Team to a dramatic victory in the 1995 Ryder
Cup at Oak Hill Country Club and also served as European Captain
in 1991 and 1993. In recent years, Gallacher had been the head professional
at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey, a position he recently relinquished
to focus on his playing career.
"I'm
very excited to be representing Callaway Golf, especially with all
the new innovations in golf equipment that Callaway has produced",
said Gallacher. "I've been playing with Big Bertha drivers
and woods for many years, and I've been practicing with some of
the company's new equipment and been loving it. This equipment gives
me the feeling that I can win the Senior Tour."
"We
have long admired Bernard Gallacher, both as a golfer and as the
driving force behind the successful European Ryder Cup teams",
said Ely Callaway, Founder, President and CEO of Callaway Golf Company.
"We're very pleased to welcome him to our family of staff professionals
and wish him the best with his senior career."
"We
are extremely delighted to have Bernard on our staff and we wish
him every success in his career on the Seniors Tour", added
Kai Flint, President of Callaway Golf Europe.
Bernard
Gallacher plays a Great Big Bertha Hawk Eye driver, X-12 irons and
Big Bertha Steelhead Metal Fairway Woods.
