CALLAWAY BIG BERTHA HAWK EYE METALWOODS

With his reputation as the master of the modern metalwood secure, Ely Callaway clearly likes to keep their rivals guessing as to his next trendsetting move. Last year's Big Bertha Stainless saw him temporarily ditch both titanium and the fixation with ever- larger head sizes in favour of an (almost) traditional steel series. But, with the critics still crying "retro", the Hawk Eye heralds a swift return to what the Americans call 'multiple USPs' (unique selling points).

It's back to titanium for starters, though most impressive is the way expert scientist Richard Helmstetter has exploited the 1992 rule change on inserts to the hilt. Not in the clubface, though (as you'd expect), but in the sole where a heavy 'Gravity Screw' lowers

the centre of gravity throughout the series, more than the one-piece War Bird plate ever did.

"This, together with a large effective area above the centre of gravity, gives golfers the best chance of achieving the trajectory that's right for them," says Helmstetter of the line where driver lofts start at 6-degrees and matching fairway woods come in 2-9-wood options.
