Hale Irwin's
record breaking performance in the US Seniors Tour Championship
was achieved using new technology from Cobra.
Irwin has a
history of turning a switch on new technology into a competitive
edge. In 1994, he switched from standard size to oversize irons
and was the first PGA Tour player to win using oversize iron technology.
He later paved the way by changing from steel to graphite-shafted
oversize irions. Last year, Irwin embraced titanium technology,
switching to a new King Cobra Ti titanium driver.
With his new
driver, Irwin immediately gained more than 16 yards off the tee
- from an average driving distance of 239.3 yards to 255.4 yards,
and went on to win his first PGA Seniors' Championship. This year,
Irwin has increased his driving distance even more, topping 261.1
yards.
Irwin made
another technology switch, this time in January 1997, Irwin left
his King Cobra irons for the new King Cobra II irons. Irwin immediately
found the winning circle, capturing three of the first four events
he entered.
Irwin then
proved to be the best player on the Senior Tour, claiming his second
straight PGA Seniors' Championship title in record fashion, establishing
a new all-time winning margin of 12 strokes on the SPGA Tour.
