TREASURES:
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
The
Putter has a leather grip that has seen better days but is
still there. The face has short dash markings. The back side
has the following markings. (1) G3 (2) a hand holding a balance
(3) V or N.B. Hutchinson and what appears to be a shuttlecock
over oak leaves? The putter show what are normal nicks and
scratches from being carried in a golf bag. In advance I would
like to Thank you in advance for any information concerning
the age and the maker also the value of the putter that you
can provide. J

The term
'heel and toe' weighting is a relatively new one according
to most modern day club designers. Your putter proves otherwise.
Manufactured around 1910, the 'balance' putter was a highly
innovative but short-lived British club. Pioneered by A Tooley
& Sons of London, then George Forrester of Elie, Scotland,
the idea was also taken up by a number of other golf companies
who thought it was going to revolutionise the playing of golf.
Sadly, like many other good ideas, it was ahead of its time
in terms of club design and failed to take off. Today, a putter
like this could expect to fetch between £80-£120 at auction
depending on condition.
