GOLF
TREASURES:
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
I
have an old golf ball with the words PRO COLONEL on the ends
and one end has 1.55 and the other 1.68. I found it in the
wall of my house when renovating. I also have a book by Francis
Ouimet "A game of Golf: A book of reminiscence" 1963 aniversary
edition with a jacket ( some scuffing), and the book is in
like new condition. Thanks for your help

In the
world of golfing antiques books and balls are the most competitive
areas in which collect in. Unlike old hickory clubs, which
constantly throw up new designs/makers names every week, both
areas are well documented and tend to attract enthusiasts
who like to collect 'names.' For example, most collectors
cannot sleep nights if they still need a certain type of ball
to complete the entire range of a particular manufacturer.
Perhaps that is why ball prices have remained so high in recent
years added to the scarcity of mint condition 'name' balls
to collect. As for the PRO COLONEL; a bramble-pattern ball
of that name was made around 1912 by the St Mungo Golf Company
of Scotland. (Today worth about $150 in good condition.) This
was then followed by a dimple-pattern ball made by the same
company in the mid 1930's, (Worth about $50.) The same logic
applies to book collectors - especially those who desire limited
edition books of a more modern vintage. As for the Francis
Ouimet book, it is currently worth between $150-$250.
