REAFFIRMS POLICY ON SALES, TOUR PLAY OF USGA- AND R&A-APPROVED
300 SERIES DRIVERS
In support of golf retailers, tour professionals and the traditions
of the game, TaylorMade Golf today
reaffirmed its worldwide equipment policy of adhering to golf's
governing rules on a club's coefficient of restitution (COR)
as they apply to each region.
"The USGA, RCGA and the R&A all have separate sets of
rules when in comes to COR, and TaylorMade will continue to
follow them by creating equipment that
meets the standards set out by each," said TaylorMade-adidas
president Mark
King. "Each of our drivers will conform to the rules -- all
while delivering the highest performance available to golfers
of all levels in that region."
"We have highlighted this stance with both retailers and tour
players, and they strongly support us helping to honour and
protect golf's integrity and traditions," he continued.
TaylorMade's statement comes on the heels of continuing confusion
between
TaylorMade's popular USGA-approved 300 Series driver, and
its May 2001
introduction of a R&A-compliant 300 Series club (R300
Series) to retailers and tour professionals in Europe.
Clarifying the tour usage guidelines between the two drivers,
European Marketing Manager, Robin Gibson said:
"The R300 Series is an extension of the 300 Series Family.
Both types are available to Tour Professionals who play in
Europe, where R&A rules apply
and both models are enjoying extensive usage."
Launched in August of 2000, the 300 Series is currently the
No. 1 driver on the USPGA Tour and is still breaking company
sales records. In a little over a month the R300 has tasted
early success in Europe with TaylorMade-adidas tour staff
pro Ian Poulter winning in his first tournament with the new
club (Moroccan Open). In addition, the R300 has helped TaylorMade
capture eight consecutive weekly driver counts on the European
PGA Tour, and four driver count titles in the last six weeks
in Japan.
The R300 Series, which is already available in Japan, is now
available in limited quantities to consumers in Europe. TaylorMade
will not be selling the R300 Series in America, Canada or
Mexico.
