We Test Taylor Made's R300 Series

Launched last month, the Taylor Made 300 series of drivers, woods and irons, allow golfers to select the club that is most suitable for their swing.

The forged irons are built for precise control; the heads are made from carbon steel and double-strike forged with a perimeter weighted blade. TaylorMade's engineers have optimised the centre of gravity, and added an "impact pad" behind the impact zone to maintain velocity and give a solid feel. The irons come in 300, 320 and 360 models which TaylorMade claim should give confidence to all levels of player.

The 300ti drivers have titanium cast club heads and are constructed to distribute weight efficiently in the clubhead. It also gives the highest ball speed of the face of any TaylorMade metal wood. With three models, the 300ti, 320ti and 360ti for low, mid and high handicap players respectively, TaylorMade allows golfers maximum distance and control to match their swing.

The 300ti fairway woods family follow suit with the golfer again being able to choose the model best suited to his weight requirements to gain distance and control. The woods have a more rounded railed sole plate and this results in a reduction in ground contact.

We sent one of our readers, Philip Hill to see whether TaylorMade's claims are true:

"As a 16 handicap golfer who does not play as much these days as I used to - now only about 2-3 times a month - I attended TaylorMade's demonstration of the new 300 series with interest.

I initially tried out the 6 iron with graphite shaft which I found to be very similar to my own clubs (if I can mention Cleveland that is!).

However I was very impressed with the 5 wood, from the 300 series, the one I used had regular length, flex, graphite shaft and standard grip. As I don't play that often these days I never use a driver and often use a 3 wood from the tee, so this 5 wood personally suited my game accordingly and was certainly most impressive!

It felt very comfortable at address and had a superb feel and balance to the club. I hit about 30 balls, some from the tee and some from the turf and I was successful with the majority.

I also tried several shots with the 3 wood which was certainly as good, although I must admit to having a preference for the 5.

I must say I have not experienced so much power in a golf club before, and without hitting particularly hard I obtained some splended results, even being praised by the local professional on some shots!

This club is definitely going on my Christmas list. I strongly recommend you try TaylorMade. "
