Christmas
Golf Shop
With Christmas
just around the next dogleg it’s time to make the shopping
list for the golfers in your family. With a range of budgets
in mind, DOMINIC PEDLER brings you ten suggestions, listed
in order of price, from stocking-fillers to serious hardware
and suitably ‘seasonal’ apparel.
The
Golfer’s Calendar 2001
Far from
an Xmas throwaway, this calendar is a little gem, beautifully
presented with historical shots from all eras of the game
 |
plundered
from lavish photo-libraries of Phil Sheldon and Dale
Concannon. But that is just the tip of the iceberg as
we chart, in bite-size chunks, the history of golf on
a day-by-day basis.
Trivia
boxes remind us of the famous landmarks of the game
while introducing us to offbeat anecdotes that will
impress even the keenest know-all in the family. Learn
the ‘fact of the day’ and by Christmas 2001 you’ll be
a golfing authority.

Taylor
Made ‘React’ Golf Glove
The
humble golf glove would hardly seem a candidate for high-tech
features but the Taylor Made R&D department has been working
overtime with their latest outing.
|
Made
from the finest stretchable Cabretta leather, the React
is not only durable and washable but also breathable
due to ‘Cool Max’. This is a new ‘climate control system
involving a special mesh that succeeds in keeping the
hand cool and dry in warm weather; warm in cool weather.
And
after the fashion in waterproof golf ball sleeves, here
comes the innovative ‘Vent Pak’ packaging which allows
the supple fibres of the glove to dry naturally, thus
apparently prolonging the life of the glove (which as
golfers know is usually all too short).

Into The Bear Pit, by Mark James
The tag
of ‘The most explosive golf book ever published’ hardly puts
it in the same league as Spycatcher or the David Shayler
diaries but, as we all know, Captain Jesse’s memoirs from
the fateful 1999 Ryder Cup, at Brookline, saw him removed
from his duties at the next encounter in what was one of the
year’s most bizzare sporting sagas. While the protracted ‘Faldogate’
was sparked by the binning of a certain good luck message,
the bigger picture concerned the ethics of revealing the secrets
of the team room in what has become sport’s most fever pitch
confrontation.
 |
Should
James have ‘done a Glen Hoddle’? Golfers can make up
their own mind with a book that has rightly become a
best-seller. Enjoy are the captivating tales of behind-the-scenes
acrimony at not just Brookline but several Ryder Cups,
including The Greenbrier, in 1979, when Jesse was again
the centre of attention.
Allegations
of bad behaviour might tarnish the game but, ultimately,
it also sells books. And this one makes for essential
reading.
Not
least because the countdown to The Belfry 2001 ‘the
rematch’, is just around the corner.

The
Quill Bag - The Masters Golf Company
|
One
of the more unusual sights in the golf-mad cities of
Japan, are the swarms of commuters that carry (along
with their laptop computers briefcases and umbrellas)
pencil-thin bags that translate roughly as ‘The Quill’.
These mysterious containers turn out to be the most
efficient way to carry sometimes a single golf club
(more usually 2-3) on their way to the space-age driving
ranges of Tokyo and Osaka.
Rarely
available in Europe, these little bags are not only
rather charming, from a design point of view, but also
highly practical for weekend knock-abouts, pitch ‘n’
putt courses or for those that walk or cycle to the
driving range without lugging a full set.
A
cult golf accessory, and an excellent gift for the novice
or ‘golfer who has everything’ alike.
The
Masters version is made from a durable, lightweight
synthetic polymer and features an adjustable carry-strap,
a ball pocket and an all-in-one, zip-up construction.

Mizuno
Windtop
 |
Mizuno
has always had a reputation for painstaking detail with
their golf equipment and the same philosophy clearly
covers the company’s latest stylish range of apparel.
Catching the eye for European golfers this winter is
the designer windtop which, despite its fashionably
discrete appearance, is conceived with various high-tech
features for comfort and freedom of movement in our
typical weather conditions.
Within
the 225gm Piquet knit is a soft Polyester microfibre
shell housing an inner lining of breathable mesh that
makes for a guaranteed 100% wind-proof structure. Meanwhile,
extra care has been taken with
|
| the
V-Neck neckline; the armholes for enhanced movement; and
the high-quality ‘rib cuff’ at the end of longer-than-
normal sleeves (made especially with the ‘extended arms’
of the golf swing in mind). |
