Titleist
DCI 990 irons

Almost
as good as the elusive major championship victory for the
marketing of modern clubs is the Shot Of The Year - now
a fixture in the golf calendar complete with a prize from
Canon. Last year it went to Sergio Garcia for his almost
one-footed, one-handed recovery from the base of the tree
down the stretch at Medinah. It was executed with a 6-iron
from a prototype set of Titleist DCI 990s, the now commercially
available range also favoured by other top players like
Davis Love III.
Titleist
claim the set, the latest in the tried-and-tested DCI line,
to be the ultimate high-performance iron, a contemporary
blade but with a variable muscleback cavity to provide more
stability than a pure muscleback.
Incorporating
many of the best features of both the DCI 962 and 962B models,
the 990 enjoys enhanced looks, feel and improved ball flight
through the set.
Garcia
himself recently gave his own official verdict: "They
look good and they suit my swing," he said after his
victory in the German Masters. "I like the flight I
get with them and I can work the ball both ways. The feel
is very soft and I get good control of distance," he
continued.
Meanwhile,
the Spaniard's win marks another landmark for the Titleist
Titanium 975D driver in the high-profile battle for tour
supremacy among the leading metalwood makers.
Only
two years old, the 975 cleaned up for a host of players
in 1999, including Tiger and David Duval. Multi-material
alloys may be all the rage among the well-heeled club golfers
but - for now at least - titanium is still the top dog among
four of the current world ranking's top five.
