Grand Slam Set Replica Brings 1930s Golf History
Alive
 |
As
the golf world buzzes with anticipation at the prospect
of Tiger Woods following in the footsteps of master Bobby
Jones by achieving Grand Slam status, true aficionados
of the Jones legend know Woods will never achieve it.
Why? Because unlike Woods, Jones never turned professional,
choosing instead to hold firm to his |
| amateur
status throughout his brilliant golfing career. In celebration
of the 70th anniversary of Bobby Jones’ Grand
Slam year, Heritage Golf of St Andrews Ltd, the St Andrews-based
maker of custom and historic replica golf clubs, today
announced the introduction of the RTJ 1930 Grand Slam
Clubs, as commissioned by the heirs of amateur golf champion
Bobby Jones. |
Limited
Edition Clubs Fully Playable
The
limited edition set of fully playable hickory golf clubs,
made in association with official Jones licence holders Golf
Links to the Past, is an exact replica of the clubs that the
legendary champion Robert Tyre Jones, Jr used during his Grand
Slam year of 1930. It was during this year that he won a remarkable
string of four championship titles, including The Open at
Hoylake, the British Amateur Championship in St Andrews, the
US Open at Interlachen, and the US Amateur Championship at
Merion Cricket Club.
Craftsmen
Use only Methods of the Times to Produce Each Set
Priced
at just USD$3,500 (£2,250 Sterling including vat), this stunning
set of clubs is handcrafted in the Home of Golf by experienced
craftsmen. Made of only premium grade traditional materials,
Heritage Golf clubmakers apply only those methods of production
used to produce the original set which helped Jones to achieve
his phenomenal success in l930. As the RTJ 1930 Grand Slam
set is a Limited Edition, each set comes complete with a certificate
of authenticity, an information booklet on Bobby Jones’ original
clubs, as well as his achievements. To ensure that the clubs
are maintained to the highest standard for those who wish
to play with the clubs, a complete set of care instructions
is included.
Optional
Accessories include Additional Clubs, Period Golf Bag and
Display Case
In
addition to the l4 hickory clubs, several very special optional
items are available. In keeping with the rules of the game
in l930 when there was no restriction on the number of clubs
a player was allowed to carry, to complete the set golfers
may purchase two further woods favoured by Jones. Both the
"Brassie" and the "Long Spoon" feature
wooden heads and hickory shafts. In addition, a custom period
golf bag crafted with canvas and leather with brass fittings
is available,.
Although
the RTJ 1930 clubs have been crafted to stand up to the toughest
play on the course, the set is perfect for displaying, and
is sure to make for great conversation with fellow golfers
and non-golfers alike. For that purpose, Heritage Golf has
designed an impressive display rack of solid mahogany, which
completes the options available which complement the l4 club
set.
"One
of the hallmarks of the new RTJ 1930 Grand Slam Clubs is that
they are considered to be the most accurate replica ever produced
of the original set that Bobby Jones used during his Grand
Slam year," said Barry Kerr, Managing Director of Heritage
Golf. "Beyond that, we have produced a set that delivers
the ultimate golf experience: a set that golfers can actually
play with and enjoy as a beautiful piece of craftsmanship,"
he added.
Grand
Slam Clubs Star Attraction at US Open
The
new Bobby Jones Grand Slam clubs were introduced on a limited
basis at the PGA Show in Orlando, Florida in February 2000,
and received a very positive response from the golf trade
and media, with a good number of orders placed. Later, at
the historic US Open in Pebble Beach which saw Tiger Woods
drive his way to an unprecedented victory, the RTJ Grand Slam
Clubs were a popular attraction.
Recognised
by International Golf Organisations
The
RTJ 1930 Grand Slam Club set were produced in co-operation
with the Augusta National Golf Club, the USGA Museum and the
Royal & Ancient’s British Golf Museum. These organisations
were extremely helpful in supplying information on, and allowing
access to, the original Bobby Jones Grand Slam clubs for the
purpose of retaining the historic accuracy of the clubs by
examining the details, down to the finest curve and type of
material used.
